Welcome and background

The Florence Nightingale Foundation (FNF) is helping the Nursing and Midwifery Council (NMC) carry out its advanced practice (AP) review. The NMC’s Council have recently approved a move towards recognising and overseeing advanced practice nursing and advanced practice midwifery in the future.

Advanced nursing and midwifery practice is defined in the UK as a level of practice in which the practitioner has demonstrated their ability to work independently at a high level across clinical practice, leadership and management, education and research.

Nurses and midwives working at this level are typically referred to as ‘advanced nurse or midwife practitioners’ – although a wide range of role titles are in use. Before the NMC makes any changes in their approach to overseeing advanced practice, they want to ensure that they fully understand the potential impacts of any proposed changes on nurses and midwives who trained outside of the UK.

About this survey

This survey is aimed at nurses and midwives currently on the NMC register who were educated and trained outside of the UK.

It will ask you a series of questions about your experiences, views, and preferences with regards to advanced practice. You don’t need to have any specialist knowledge or experience of advanced practice to take part.

You won’t be asked to provide any personal information when responding to this survey. Responses we publish will be fully anonymised (this means we will remove any information that could identify you or anyone else) and presented in a final report to the NMC. Your responses will be collected and stored in line with FNF’s privacy policy.

The survey should take between 15-25 minutes to complete , depending on how many questions you are asked. You can save your questions and come back to the survey at any time before the deadline by clicking the ‘save’ button at the bottom of each page.

The deadline for completing the survey is Tuesday 28 May 2024 at 7pm.

If you are taking this on a mobile phone, you may have to tilt the phone sideways to see the answer choices clearly for some of the questions.

Thank you

As a small gesture of appreciation, we would like to offer all respondents the chance to win a place on our next Internationally Educated Nurses and Midwives (IENM) online leadership programme. Full details on how to win are available at the end of the survey.

If you have any questions about the survey or experience technical difficulties when completing it, please contact [email protected].

Thank you in advance for your time.
