Consultation: NHS Priorities for Change

Welcome and thank you

In October 2024 the Department of Health and Social Care launched a consultation to inform the development of a new 10 Year Plan for the NHS in England, now due to be published in June 2025.

A number of policy ideas were highlighted during the initial engagement and the DHSC is once again consulting with staff, experts and members of the public to understand what they think of the emerging ideas for change.

Given the insightful and much appreciated feedback shared last year, FNF would like to again consult with our expert members to form our organisational response to this consultation. Your insights as nursing and midwifery leaders are invaluable in understanding what changes are most needed.

This very short survey should take between 5-10 minutes to complete. The deadline is 10 April 2025.

Your responses will remain anonymised, with nothing directly attributable to you.

About your role

Supporting Staff to Care for Patients and Service Users

During the first consultation, respondents reported experiencing challenges accessing care, care feeling disjointed and inconsistent across services, or poor communication surrounding their care.

One particular issue raised was patients and/or service users having to book separate appointments with different professionals if they had multiple health conditions or concerns.

Ideas proposed for tackling such challenges include supporting clinical staff to take a more holistic approach to patients health and investing more in non-clinical staff to support in coordinating patient and service user care.

Improving Health in Areas of Greatest Need

During the first consultation, respondents highlighted feeling that there is a ‘postcode lottery’ for people’s experience of care, access, and health outcomes.

One suggestion for addressing these challenges is to encourage staff to work in areas of the country with the greatest needs or that have higher levels of staff shortages. This could be through getting a higher wage or having their student loan repayments reduced.

Thank you so much for taking the time to complete this survey. Your responses will be used to inform the FNF response to the consultation, ensuring that the voices of our nursing and midwifery leaders are represented.
