GR1.9 – Facilitator Biographies

Lucy Brown, Deputy Director of Academy

Lucy started her nursing career at Guys and St Thomas’ specialising in Paediatric Intensive Care before moving to Australia where she worked in the Royal Children’s Hospital in Brisbane. While in post Lucy joined the paediatric retrieval service working alongside the Royal Flying Doctors service and also completed her MSc winning an award for her thesis on reducing the risks of barotrauma in the PICU patient. This also gained her a place with the Golden Key International Honour Society where only the top 15% of global academic students are invited to join.

Lucy joined Bupa on returning to the UK working in a numerous clinical leadership role. Lucy designed and developed the Leading Clinical Excellence programme for Bupa receiving a global award for her work.

Most recently Lucy has been working for Circle Health group as a Director of Nursing supporting the NHS resilience work on the frontline.

Claire Henry MBE RGN BSc. (Hons) PGDip

With over 30 years working in clinical, managerial and quality improvement within the NHS and 3rd sector, Claire has an abundance of experience in palliative and end of life care. Claire brings flexibility, energy, humour, creativity and curiosity to all she does focusing on what makes the difference to people in relation to end of life care.

Claire has led national programmes and independent reviews including the NHS End of Life Care Strategy for England and National Choice Offer for end of life care “What’s important to me”.

Claire has been actively involved in community engagement and developments nationally including Dying Matters which she led for 3 years. She was also co- founder of the National Lung Cancer Forum for Nurses.

In 2013 Claire was awarded an MBE in the Queen’s Birthday Honours for her services to improving end-of-life care and in the same year
received a lifetime achievement award from the International Journal of Palliative Nursing.

More recently Claire has been working independently supporting health and social care organisations in a variety of aspects relating to palliative and end of life care.

Susanna Shouls, BSc, MSc

Susanna is an expert in quality improvement and measurement for improvement methodologies and has considerable experience in programme and project management. She has specific interest in end of life care, patient safety, public health, community development and same day emergency care.

Susanna has led health economy wide improvement programmes, conducted independent evaluations, research and
designed national improvement programmes.

She has and is working for a range of organisations including social services, NHS hospitals and charities. She is currently
working independently and for the NHS. She has a first degree in Human Biology, King’s College London and a masters in Operational Research, London School of Economics.

Sarah Garrett – Leadership Associate, Leadership and Organisational Development The King’s Fund

Sarah is a Leadership Associate with The King’ s Fund and a freelance consultant in improvement and patient safety. Her King’s Fund work includes the Senior Leaders Programme for Cambridge University Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust, the Florence Nightingale Fellowship programme and the Senior Clinical Leaders Programme.

With a background in frontline NHS management, Sarah has spent much of her career working nationally on new approaches to improving quality, safety and patient experience. She was a founding member of the NHS Clinical Governance Support Team, national manager of the Pursuing Perfection initiative with the Institute of Healthcare Improvement and NHS Modernisation Agency, and is co-author of the NHS Institute book, Thinking Differently. She was a core team member of the national Patient Safety First campaign and, more recently, the Sign up to Safety campaign.  

Sarah’s international work has included programmes on leadership for improvement and innovation with the New Zealand Ministry of Health and the Leadership and Quality Academy for Legacy Health System in the United States. She is guest faculty for the Washington State Hospital Association’s Executive Safety Academy and the Canadian Patient Safety Institute.

David Naylor – The King’s Fund

David is a director of a consultancy practice researching and developing practical interventions to mitigate the effects of bullying and incivility for individuals, teams and services.  He has lead projects at a senior level in the NHS and Civil Service.  This work builds on his doctoral research into the necessity and difficulty of being ‘constructively awkward’ in organisations; a two-year secondment to the NHS Sign up to Safety Campaign; and a long career in leadership and organisational development at The King’s Fund.

At The Kings Fund, David co-directed twelve cohorts of the Top Manager programme and led various senior leadership and board development projects.  David previously worked for Tavistock Consulting and taught on the Tavistock’s doctorate programme in Consultancy.  He has been a Chief Executive of a VCS organisation providing residential and nursing home care for people suffering from enduring mental illness and with learning disabilities.  He was a service development manager in Haringey mental health services; the mental health advisor to the Leonard Cheshire Foundation; and a ward manager at the Maudsley Hospital.

David has a professional doctorate and a MA in organisational change.  He trained in consultancy at the Tavistock, facilitation at the University of Surrey and has a diploma in psychodynamic counselling from Birkbeck.

Sarah Blumenau – RADA

Sarah worked as an actor, in theatre, radio, television and film before training as a voice teacher at The Royal Central School of Speech and Drama, where she gained an MA in Voice Studies. Sarah works with a wide range of individuals and groups from both public and private sectors, at all organisational levels. Recent clients include: Google, Freshfields Bruckhaus Deringer, The Guardian, The Financial Times, HSBC, J.P. Morgan, Santander, Kinetic, Wolf Olins, Mother London, Deloite, Amey, Centrica, Asos, Photobox.

Specialisms include: Personal and voice impact, presentation skills, interview skills, managing anxiety, public speaking, executive presence and leadership development. Sarah also works in the education sector on the development of communication skills for personal, social, educational and career growth. She trains a range of clients from students through to head teachers and consults for institutions throughout the sector. She is passionate about working with women and girls, and the specific challenges faced throughout the various career stages.

Conrad Hornby – RADA

Conrad trained as an actor at the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art; after graduating with a Diploma with Honours, he worked in theatre and film. Before attending RADA, he worked in international banking in the City of London for six years. He has also worked in local government supporting senior management in children’s services and community care. In 2014, he graduated with a BA (Hons) in Literature from the Open University.

Conrad has worked with RADA Business since 2005. He is an experienced role player and tutor. He enjoys fusing business and performance skills to coach delegates to achieve their potential in areas such as personal impact, voice and presentation.

As well as working on many open courses with RADA Business, he has worked all over the world and the UK in the corporate sector with clients including John Lewis, Omnicom, HSBC, Allianz, United Technologies, KPMG, Triton, London & Quadrant, Florence Nightingale Foundation and Skanska. He has also worked with many government and NHS organisations.
