The aim of the FNF Innovation and Entrepreneurship module
To develop nursing, midwifery and allied health professional skills in Innovation, Intra- and Entrepreneurship and the capability to influence organisational and personal business outcomes.
Programme Outcomes
- Provide an introduction to Innovation and Entrepreneurship and demonstrate how these skills can be used in a healthcare environment
- Achieve an innovator’s mindset to create an idea and explore the steps to develop it.
- Identify Enablers and Barriers to innovation and discuss how a culture that enables inclusive innovation can be fostered.
- Explain the difference between Entra- and Intra-preneurship
- An introduction to setting up a business.
Authors
Lisa Rickers
Lisa Rickers is a specialist nurse with over 20 years’ experience. She has a keen interest in digital health solutions and has worked on projects such as digital pre-habilitation, rehabilitation and creating online patient communities. Lisa is passionate about person centred care and has co-created and co-produced solutions with people who have lived experience of obesity and other chronic conditions. Her curiosity makes her a life-long learner and generator for ideas and solutions.
Lisa holds an MSc in health psychology and has experience of working with patient groups with long term conditions and health promotion. Lisa has been a co-founder of an early-stage start-up and is an alumni on the NHS Clinical Entrepreneur Programme. She is passionate about seeing greater nurse involvement within the innovation ecosystem and is working to collaborate with partners to create transformation. She if founder of The iCrowd which is an early stage organisation to promote, improve representation and support nursing innovation.
In her clinical roles Lisa has supported clinical trials and research, led clinical services and worked across the health care system including primary, secondary and tertiary care. Lisa uses a systems thinking approach to help tackle complex problems with multiple stakeholders. She has a keen interest in organisational culture, performance coaching and sustainable solutions.

Robert Waterson
Rob Waterson joined the University of East London in February 2020 and is currently the Dean of the School of Health, Sport & Bioscience having previously been the Director of Careers and Enterprise. He joined UEL from the London regional team of Health Education England where he was the Nursing and Midwifery Programme Manager. In this role, he oversaw the development of the nursing associate role within education establishments, NHS organisations and Primary and Social Care organisations.
Rob has a wealth of experience in vocational learning having previously been the business manager and lead for apprentices at the Institute of Vocational Learning at LSBU. Rob has been involved in the development of the nursing associate programme since its inception in 2016 and has an interest in clinical workforce transformation and redesign. He has been involved with leading the innovation and redesign of a simulated Hospital and Primary Care Training Hub, training students for the future of healthcare.
